Stewards of Appalachia Service Project
read the full report and see all pictures

Twenty three volunteers from Kentucky Councils went to Louisia, Kentucky and the Father Beiting Appalachian Mission Center for the 7th project in two years.  As volunteers arrived they were assigned to jobs in Lawrence and Martin counties of the eastern Kentucky mountains.   Martin County is the poorest county in Kentucky and the sixteenth poorest in the nation.

One group of volunteers installed a new electrical panel, rewired the entire home, new windows, repaired and sealed roof, delivered and installed heating, new plumbing in entire home, installed complete new bath room with washer and dryer, removed one wall to make room for the children to have a bed and built one closet. We installed and finished drywall, painted the interior of the home, install donated cabinets, refrigerator, cook stove and bunk beds. We provided new bedding for all beds, install new curtains and blinds and installed new siding Knights in front of the renovated home

The second project was the initial renovation of the first drug rehabilitation center in Eastern Kentucky.  The closest center to the area is in Louisville, which is two hundred and fifty miles away. Our task was to remove the existing water damaged ceiling in three rooms and replace with donated drywall.  When complete, the Rehabilitation Center will occupy two buildings and a small motel which will be used to house the patients.

We have been asked to help support a second Point of Hope next October. The facility will be located in Martin County near the town of Inez. If we chose to take on this task and can raise sufficient funding, they have offered to name the facility after our group. The current plan is to move five or six donated mobile homes to a donated piece of property. They will set-up the mobile homes, provide water, sewer and electric prior to our arrival. Our task will be to renovate the mobile homes, doors, floors, windows, and install underpinning.

Hopefully with God's help, our Worthy State Deputy and the many K of C Councils in this state and nation, we can pique the interest for more volunteers and especially additional funding. We have way too many families living in conditions many think are only seen in third world countries.
